Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Hepatobiliary System Research
  • Nanotechnology in Medicine

Background:

  • Current MR-cholangiography techniques face limitations in visualizing the entire biliary tree.
  • A dual-contrast approach is needed to differentiate liver parenchyma from bile ducts effectively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of combining superparamagnetic particles (SPP) and Cr-HIDA for enhanced MR-cholangiography.
  • To assess the safety and diagnostic potential of this combined contrast method in canine models.

Main Methods:

  • Dogs were injected with SPP as a negative contrast agent for liver parenchyma and Cr-HIDA as a positive contrast agent for bile ducts.
  • Image intensity changes in the liver and bile ducts were analyzed at various time points post-injection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Liver function tests and blood/urine analysis were performed to assess safety.
  • Main Results:

    • SPP significantly reduced liver signal intensity for 4-5 hours, with maximal effect around 30 minutes.
    • Cr-HIDA enhanced gallbladder visualization and, when combined with SPP, enabled clear visualization of even small bile ducts.
    • Choledochus duct and duodenum visualization was achieved after cholecystokinin administration.
    • All safety tests remained within normal limits throughout the experiments.

    Conclusions:

    • The combination of SPP and Cr-HIDA is a promising technique for MR-cholangiography.
    • This method allows for detailed visualization of biliary anatomy and holds potential for evaluating liver pathologies.
