Sudden death during doxorubicin administration.

J E Wortman, V S Lucas, E Schuster

    Cancer
    |November 1, 1979

    Summary

Doxorubicin and daunorubicin can cause life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death in patients. Close monitoring during and after administration is crucial to prevent severe cardiac events.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Oncology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Doxorubicin and daunorubicin are anthracycline chemotherapy agents.
    • These agents are known to cause electrocardiogram (EKG) abnormalities.

    Observation:

    • Three patients experienced sudden death or severe arrhythmias during or after doxorubicin administration.
    • These acute cardiac events occurred in close temporal proximity to chemotherapy treatment.

    Findings:

    • The observed severe cardiac arrhythmias and fatalities were likely induced by doxorubicin and daunorubicin.
    • The findings suggest a direct cardiotoxic effect of these agents leading to acute decompensation.

    Implications:

    • Emphasizes the critical need for vigilant cardiac monitoring in patients receiving doxorubicin.
    • Highlights the potential for acute, severe cardiac arrhythmias as a serious adverse effect of anthracycline chemotherapy.
    • Underscores the importance of prompt recognition and management of cardiotoxicity during cancer treatment.
