We introduce Low-Overhead CoAP-EAP (LO-CoAP-EAP), a novel wireless-independent network access authentication service for Low-Power Wide Area Networks (LP-WAN). This solution enhances IoT security and interoperability across diverse LP-WAN technologies.
Area of Science:
- Internet of Things (IoT) security
- Wireless networking protocols
- Network access authentication
Background:
- Low-Power Wide Area Networks (LP-WAN) enable long-range, low-energy IoT communication but face bandwidth limitations.
- Network access authentication is crucial for IoT resource management but current LP-WAN solutions lack interoperability.
- Existing authentication methods are often technology-specific, hindering seamless integration across different LP-WANs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a wireless-independent network access authentication solution for LP-WAN environments.
- To address the challenge of interoperability issues in current LP-WAN authentication mechanisms.
- To enhance security and manageability for diverse IoT applications utilizing LP-WAN.
Main Methods:
- Developed Low-Overhead CoAP-EAP (LO-COAP-EAP), a service building upon prior work for Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR-WPAN).
- Integrated Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) infrastructures with the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP).
- Utilized the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) to create a technology-agnostic network authentication service.
Main Results:
- LO-COAP-EAP provides a unified approach to network access authentication for various LP-WAN technologies.
- The proposed service demonstrates a balance between flexibility, wireless independence, scalability, and performance.
- Successfully established a foundation for interoperable authentication services in the expanding LP-WAN landscape.
Conclusions:
- LO-COAP-EAP effectively fills the gap for wireless-independent authentication in LP-WANs.
- The solution promotes enhanced security and interoperability, crucial for the future growth of IoT.
- This approach offers a scalable and performant trade-off for managing network access in constrained environments.
