Background:

Recurrent dislocation of the patella is a debilitating condition.
Previous surgical interventions have varying success rates.
Arthroscopic lateral release is a potential treatment option.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of arthroscopic lateral release in managing recurrent patellar dislocation.
To assess patient outcomes and identify factors influencing success.

Main Methods:

A review of 41 knees undergoing arthroscopic lateral release for recurrent patellar dislocation.
Follow-up averaged four years, with results graded using the Crosby and Insall criteria.
Assessment included recurrence of dislocation, subluxation, and patellar surface lesions.

Main Results:

No dislocations occurred post-operatively in 28 knees (68%).
Less satisfactory outcomes were associated with patellar subluxation and generalized ligamentous laxity.
A novel patellar surface lesion was observed in 8 knees, with no reported complications.

Conclusions:

Arthroscopic lateral release demonstrates superior results compared to other reported techniques for recurrent patellar dislocation.
The procedure is recommended for both open and arthroscopic approaches.
Careful patient selection, considering patellar stability and ligamentous laxity, is important.
