Summary

Preoperative dutasteride use did not impact blood loss during open prostatectomy (OP). Delaying surgery for dutasteride administration is unnecessary for patients undergoing OP.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Open prostatectomy (OP) is a surgical procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, such as dutasteride, are used to treat BPH.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if preoperative dutasteride administration affects blood loss during open prostatectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 110 patients undergoing OP.
  • Group I: 50 patients received dutasteride for at least 4 weeks preoperatively.
  • Group II: 60 patients did not receive dutasteride.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in prostate volumes, PSA, or preoperative Hgb/Hct between groups.
  • Postoperative hemoglobin reduction: 2.19 g/dL (dutasteride) vs. 2.5 g/dL (no dutasteride), P=0.260.
  • Postoperative hematocrit reduction: 5.8% (dutasteride) vs. 7.3% (no dutasteride), P=0.068.

Conclusions:

  • Preoperative dutasteride use does not significantly affect blood loss during open prostatectomy.
  • Surgery should not be postponed to administer dutasteride prior to OP.
