Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare self-reported physical activity (PA) levels in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients with the general population.
  • To identify factors associated with PA levels in SSc patients.
  • To explore SSc patients' needs and preferences for PA promotion and guidance.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-nine SSc patients completed a health-enhancing PA questionnaire.
  • PA levels were compared to Dutch population data.
  • Factors associated with low vs. high PA were analyzed using univariate and multivariate methods.

Main Results:

  • SSc patients reported significantly fewer total minutes of PA per week compared to the general population (1704 vs. 2614 minutes).
  • The proportion of patients meeting PA recommendations did not differ significantly by age or gender.
  • Male gender, lower functional ability (Scleroderma Health Assessment Questionnaire - SHAQ), and lack of energy were associated with lower PA levels.

Conclusions:

  • Systemic sclerosis patients exhibit significantly lower weekly PA than the general population.
  • Male gender, impaired functional ability, and fatigue are key barriers to PA in SSc.
  • Health professionals can use these findings to provide targeted PA information and support to SSc patients.
