Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

891
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Binet's Contribution to Measures of Intelligence01:23

Binet's Contribution to Measures of Intelligence

1.8K
Alfred Binet, along with his student Théophile Simon, was tasked by the French Ministry of Education in 1904 to create a method for identifying students who struggled to learn through conventional classroom instruction. This initiative aimed to address overcrowding by placing such students in specialized schools. Binet and Simon developed an intelligence test comprising 30 tasks, ranging from simple commands, like touching one's nose or ear, to more complex tasks, such as drawing...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychometrics
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • The Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale-2 (GPIUS-2) is a self-report measure based on a cognitive behavioral model of Internet addiction.
  • Evaluating the psychometric properties of translated instruments is crucial for cross-cultural research and clinical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the psychometric properties of the French version of the GPIUS-2 in a student population.
  • To evaluate the relevance of the generalized problematic Internet use model in this context.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 563 university students (ages 18-35) completed online questionnaires, including the French GPIUS-2, the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), and the Center for Epidemiologic Study-Depression scale (CES-D).
  • Confirmatory Factorial Analyses and Structural Equation Modeling were used to assess model fit and construct validity.
  • Correlational analyses examined convergent and concurrent validity.

Main Results:

  • Confirmatory Factorial Analyses indicated a poor but acceptable fit for both the original five-factor and four-factor models.
  • Structural Equation Modeling showed a poor fit, suggesting construct validity issues.
  • Significant correlations were found between the GPIUS-2, its factors, the IAT, time spent online, and depression scores (CES-D).

Conclusions:

  • The French version of the GPIUS-2 exhibits insufficient psychometric properties in this student sample, consistent with prior research.
  • Despite psychometric limitations, the French GPIUS-2 shows potential as a multidimensional tool for assessing problematic internet use among students.
  • The scale's solid theoretical foundation suggests promise for future research and clinical applications in understanding Internet addiction.
