Ethanol embolotherapy effectively treated complex vascular malformations in eight patients. This minimally invasive technique provided a successful management option for unresectable arteriovenous malformations and hemangiomas.

Background:

Unresectable vascular malformations pose significant treatment challenges.
Surgical options are often limited or unsuccessful for complex cases.

Observation:

Eight patients with unresectable vascular malformations (six arteriovenous malformations, two hemangiomas) were treated.
Four patients had prior unsuccessful surgeries; four were non-operative candidates.
Multiple staged embolizations were required for large, complex symptomatic vascular malformations (SVMs).

Findings:

Absolute ethanol was used for embolization via transcatheter and direct percutaneous puncture methods.
Nine transcatheter and 21 direct percutaneous puncture embolizations were performed.
Ethanol embolotherapy demonstrated efficacy in managing SVMs when performed using strict techniques.
