Pseudomonas putrefaciens rarely causes human illness. Recent cases suggest two distinct syndromes: one linked to lower extremity infections and another more severe form in debilitated patients.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Pseudomonas putrefaciens is an uncommon pathogen in human infections.
  • Only five cases of P. putrefaciens bacteremia were reported globally before recent observations.

Observation:

  • Four cases of P. putrefaciens bacteremia were observed within a recent 12-month period.
  • Cases included patients with chronic lower extremity infections, neutropenia, and fulminant septicemia with disseminated intravascular coagulation.
  • Two patients with prosthetic devices did not experience device-related complications.

Findings:

  • Two potential clinical syndromes associated with P. putrefaciens bacteremia are proposed.
  • Syndrome 1: Associated with chronic lower extremity infections, generally well-tolerated, and responsive to antibiotics.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Syndrome 2: More severe, potentially linked to underlying debility, liver disease, or malignancy.
  • Implications:

    • The recent increase in P. putrefaciens isolation requires further investigation to determine its clinical significance.
    • Understanding these distinct syndromes may aid in early diagnosis and appropriate management of P. putrefaciens infections.
    • Further research is needed to clarify the clinical relevance of differentiating between the two proposed syndromes.
