  • 298 children (18-48 months) in Algerian refugee camps were studied.
  • Early child development assessed using Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ-3).

  • Median UIC was 451.6 μg/L, with 72% exceeding 300 μg/L.
  • 14% of children exhibited thyroid disturbances, with 10% having abnormal TSH levels.
  • Thyroid dysfunction was associated with significantly lower odds of higher ASQ scores (aOR 0.46-0.42).

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid dysfunction is associated with poorer developmental status in children with excessive iodine intake.
  • High iodine intake may contribute to thyroid dysfunction and developmental delays.
  • Further research is crucial given the increasing global issue of iodine excess.
