Regularly weighing oneself is a key weight management skill for bariatric surgery patients. Successful weight loss and maintenance are linked to consistent use of this self-monitoring technique.
Area of Science:
- Bariatric Surgery Outcomes
- Behavioral Medicine
- Obesity Research
Background:
- Bariatric surgery requires long-term adherence to weight management skills.
- The perceived value of specific skills among patients is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify which weight management skills bariatric patients find most and least valuable.
- To determine the association between skill usage and weight management outcomes post-surgery.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional survey of bariatric patients one or more years after surgery.
- Assessment of weight management skill usage.
- Correlation of skill usage with weight loss and weight regain.
Main Results:
- Decreased skill usage correlated with unsuccessful weight loss (<50% excess weight lost) and weight regain.
- Weighing regularly was identified as the most helpful skill by successful participants.
- A majority of participants, both successful and unsuccessful, discontinued food journaling.
Conclusions:
- Regular weighing is a valuable self-monitoring skill for bariatric patients.
- Skill adherence is crucial for successful long-term weight management after bariatric procedures.
- Food journaling may be less consistently utilized or perceived as less valuable than regular weighing.
