Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

463
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.

Management of Insomnia

688
The sleep cycle, an integral part of human health, consists of several stages with distinct characteristics and functions. It begins with a transition from wakefulness to sleep, known as the light sleep phase, followed by the restorative deep sleep phase, essential for physical recovery and growth. The cycle concludes with the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase, characterized by high brain activity and vivid dreaming. Insomnia, a prevalent sleep disorder, involves difficulty falling asleep, staying...

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder01:15

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder

1.9K
REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by the absence of muscle paralysis that normally occurs during the REM phase of sleep. This absence allows individuals to physically act out their dreams, which are often vivid and disturbing. Common behaviors exhibited during episodes include kicking, punching, and yelling. These actions can be dangerous, potentially leading to injuries for the person with RBD or their bed partner.
RBD is significantly associated with...

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

603
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events,...

Insomnia01:27

Insomnia

507
Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, and waking up too early without being able to return to sleep. People with insomnia often experience these disruptions at least three nights a week for at least one month. Chronic insomnia, which lasts for at least three months, can lead to increased anxiety, which in turn can worsen sleep difficulties, creating a cycle of sleeplessness and stress.
Multiple factors contribute...

Summary

Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) recall worse sleep than controls, but objective measures show no differences. This suggests a memory bias influences how PTSD affects sleep perception.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Sleep disturbances are frequently reported in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Objective evidence supporting subjective sleep complaints in PTSD is often lacking.
  • Discrepancies between subjective and objective sleep assessments are common in clinical populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare subjective (self-report) and objective (actigraphy) sleep evaluations in veterans with PTSD and controls.
  • To investigate potential memory biases in the subjective reporting of sleep quality in PTSD.

Main Methods:

  • Participants included veterans with and without PTSD.
  • Sleep was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (retrospective) and a sleep diary (recording night).
  • Objective sleep data were collected using wrist actigraphy (Actiwatch-64) on the recording night.

Main Results:

  • The PTSD group reported significantly worse sleep quality retrospectively and on the recording night compared to controls.
  • Objective actigraphy and diary measures on the recording night showed no significant differences in awakenings, total sleep time, or wake after sleep onset between groups.
  • Diary-reported awakenings were fewer than actigraphically measured awakenings.

Conclusions:

  • Subjective reports of poor sleep in PTSD may be influenced by memory bias, overestimating sleep disturbances.
  • Objective sleep measures do not consistently support subjective complaints of poor sleep in veterans with PTSD.
  • Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying sleep perception in PTSD.
