Summary

Endoscopic transcanal cartilage tympanoplasty preserves cochlear function and sensorineural hearing. Distortion product otoacoustic emission measurements showed no significant changes, indicating the procedure is safe for hearing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate audiologic outcomes after endoscopic transcanal cartilage tympanoplasty.
  • To assess the impact of this technique on cochlear function.
  • To investigate potential adverse effects of endoscopic equipment on hearing.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 33 patients with chronic otitis media undergoing endoscopic transcanal cartilage tympanoplasty.
  • Pre- and postoperative measurements included distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) and pure tone audiometry (PTA).
  • Evaluated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), bone conduction, and air-bone gap (ABG); endoscope usage time was recorded.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference in DPOAE SNR values was observed postoperatively.
  • Bone conduction hearing improved significantly at 0.5 and 1 kHz (P<0.05).
  • No significant correlation found between audiologic outcomes and endoscope usage time (P>0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic transcanal cartilage tympanoplasty maintains stable cochlear function and sensorineural hearing.
  • The cold light source used in endoscopy does not appear to cause significant adverse effects on cochlear function.
  • This technique is a safe and effective option for managing chronic otitis media.
