Summary

Oocyte size and shape (morphometrics) do not reliably predict embryo development after ICSI. However, ooplasm diameter may help predict embryo cleavage timing in IVF.

Background:

  • Oocyte quality is crucial for successful fertilization and embryo development.
  • Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a common IVF technique.
  • Predicting embryo development can optimize selection for transfer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between metaphase II (MII) oocyte morphometric parameters and subsequent embryo morphokinetics following ICSI.
  • To determine if oocyte morphology can predict embryo development and selection in ICSI cycles.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study evaluating MII oocyte morphometry (ooplasm diameter, zona pellucida width, etc.).
  • Assessment of embryo morphokinetic variables (pronuclear appearance, cleavage times, irregular divisions).
  • Statistical analysis to correlate oocyte parameters with embryo development milestones.

Main Results:

  • Oocyte morphometric parameters, including ooplasm diameter, showed a significant relationship with specific embryo cleavage timings (tPB2, t5, t8).
  • No significant associations were found between overall oocyte morphometry and other key morphokinetic parameters or embryo arrest.
  • Oocyte morphometry did not prove to be a reliable predictor for embryo selection in ICSI cycles.

Conclusions:

  • Morphometric parameters of MII oocytes are not sufficient for predicting embryo morphokinetics or for embryo selection in ICSI.
  • Ooplasm diameter may serve as a potential marker for predicting the timing of embryo cleavage during IVF.
