Inactive fibroblasts, called fibrocytes, become activated by various stimuli, such as growth factors and inflammatory cytokines. Summary

Giant cell fibroblastoma is a rare soft tissue tumor in children, typically affecting young males. While local recurrence is common, this rare tumor does not metastasize, preventing misdiagnosis as sarcoma.

  • Giant cell fibroblastoma (GCF) is an uncommon intermediate-grade soft tissue neoplasm.
  • GCF predominantly affects males in the first decade of life.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial to avoid misclassification as sarcoma.

Observation:

  • A case of GCF is presented in a 3-year-old boy.
  • The patient presented with a five-month history of painless swelling.
  • The swelling was located on the medial aspect of the right ankle.

Findings:

  • GCF is characterized by a high rate of local recurrence.
  • Metastasis has not been reported in cases of GCF.
  • Distinguishing GCF from other soft tissue tumors is essential.

Implications:

  • Proper identification of GCF prevents unnecessary aggressive treatment for sarcoma.
  • Understanding GCF's behavior aids in appropriate patient management.
  • Further research may elucidate specific diagnostic markers for GCF.
