Background:

  • Behçet's syndrome is a rare multisystem inflammatory disease.
  • Neurologic involvement, or neuro-Behçet's disease, can significantly impact patient prognosis.
  • Understanding the prevalence and characteristics of neurologic involvement is crucial for timely diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively investigate the prevalence and specific types of neurologic involvement in patients with Behçet's syndrome.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of computed tomographic (CT) scans and the clinical significance of headaches in neuro-Behçet's disease.
  • To assess the long-term prognosis of neurologic manifestations in Behçet's syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 323 consecutive patients diagnosed with Behçet's syndrome over a 12-month period.
  • Neurologic evaluation was performed on 46 patients presenting with headaches or other neurologic symptoms and signs.
  • Follow-up assessments were conducted over approximately 12 months to monitor neurologic findings.

Main Results:

  • Only 17 (5.3%) of the evaluated patients exhibited neurologic involvement.
  • Cerebral hemispheric lesions were as frequent as brain-stem involvement.

  • Clinical assessment for associated neurologic signs is essential when patients present with headaches.
  • The prognosis for neurologic involvement in Behçet's syndrome appears favorable, with limited worsening observed during the follow-up period.
