Background:

  • Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is typically contraindicated in homeless populations due to perceived high risks.
  • Homelessness presents significant challenges to post-operative recovery and long-term patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the medical and social outcomes of homeless veterans undergoing TJA.
  • To assess the impact of integrated healthcare services on TJA success in this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 37 TJAs performed on 33 homeless veterans between 2000 and 2014.
  • Analysis of inpatient complications, 1-year follow-up data, and long-term housing and employment status.
  • Evaluation of the role of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical and social services.

Main Results:

  • No major inpatient complications were observed across the 37 TJAs.
  • No surgery-related reoperations or readmissions were recorded at final follow-up.
  • At follow-up, 24 patients achieved stable housing and 9 were employed.
