Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the inhalation techniques for the HandiHaler®, Breezhaler®, Genuair®, and Respimat® devices.
  • To assess patient preferences for the Breezhaler®, Genuair®, and Respimat® inhalers.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, cross-sectional study involving 98 COPD patients who were current HandiHaler users.
  • Patients' inhalation techniques were assessed using a checklist after using HandiHaler and two of the three new devices.
  • Logistic regression was used to identify the device with the fewest errors.

Main Results:

  • Adequate inhalation technique varied among devices; 57.1% of patients had adequate HandiHaler technique.
  • No significant difference in adequate technique between Breezhaler and Genuair.
  • Significantly fewer patients (62%) had adequate technique with Respimat compared to Genuair.

Conclusions:

  • Inhalation techniques for COPD patients are suboptimal and differ across devices.
  • New inhaler introductions present opportunities to re-evaluate patient technique and preferences.
  • Further research is needed to explore the link between inhaler preference, technique, and treatment adherence.
