Summary

Neuromuscular Taping (NMT) improved hand function and reduced pain in women with Systemic sclerosis. This novel taping application showed beneficial effects, warranting further research for SSc patients.

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) frequently causes significant hand dysfunction.
  • Neuromuscular Taping (NMT) is an emerging technique with potential to enhance physical functioning.
  • The efficacy of NMT in managing SSc-related hand impairments requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of Neuromuscular Taping on hand functionality in patients diagnosed with Systemic sclerosis.
  • To evaluate changes in pain, specific functional scales, and physical measures post-NMT intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-three women diagnosed with Systemic sclerosis were enrolled.
  • Standardized scales (Cochin Hand Functional Disability, Hand Mobility in Sclerodermia, Modified Rodnan Skin Score, Dreiser Algo - Functional Index) were used for evaluation.
  • Assessments were conducted before NMT, immediately after, and at one, three, and six months post-application.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant improvements were observed across all evaluated functional scales throughout the six-month period.
  • Patients experienced a reduction in pain and Raynaud Phenomenon.
  • Finger flexion demonstrated notable improvement following NMT application.

Conclusions:

  • Neuromuscular Taping demonstrates a beneficial effect on hand function and related symptoms in patients with Systemic sclerosis.
  • The findings suggest NMT as a promising therapeutic option for improving quality of life in SSc patients.
  • Further research is recommended to validate these preliminary results and explore long-term outcomes.
