Summary
Rotifer populations adapt to unpredictable environments by increasing sexual reproduction, a bet-hedging strategy. Diapause egg hatching, however, did not correlate with environmental predictability in this study.
Area of Science:
- Evolutionary biology
- Ecology
- Environmental science
Background:
- Organismal adaptation to environmental fluctuations is key in evolutionary biology.
- Mediterranean rotifer populations face varying habitat unpredictability.
- Cyclically parthenogenetic rotifers reproduce clonally with occasional sex, producing diapausing eggs for survival.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between environmental unpredictability and diapause-related traits in *Brachionus plicatilis* rotifers.
- To test if environmental unpredictability correlates with the propensity for sex and hatching fraction of diapausing eggs.
Main Methods:
- Studied clones from nine *Brachionus plicatilis* populations with varying environmental unpredictability.
- Quantified pond unpredictability using satellite imagery from a previous study.
- Assessed genetic variation for sex propensity and hatching fraction within populations.
Main Results:
- Significant genetic variation was found for both sex propensity and hatching fraction.
- A positive correlation existed between pond unpredictability and the propensity for sexual reproduction.
- No relationship was found between environmental predictability and the hatching fraction of diapausing eggs.
Conclusions:
- Rotifer populations demonstrate local adaptation to time-varying environments.
- Increased sexual reproduction acts as a bet-hedging strategy against unpredictable environments.
- Life-history traits can be linked to quantitative measures of environmental unpredictability.

Natural Selection and Adaptation
1.5K
Natural selection, a fundamental concept in evolutionary biology, is the mechanism by which evolution is driven, favoring organisms that are best adapted to their environments. This process enhances their chances of survival and reproduction. Adaptation, a key outcome of this process, involves genetic modifications that optimize an organism's functionality under specific environmental challenges, such as extreme cold or thinner air at high altitudes.

Transcription
157.3K
Overview
Transcription is the process of synthesizing RNA from a DNA sequence by RNA polymerase. It is the first step in producing a protein from a gene sequence. Additionally, many other proteins and regulatory sequences are involved in the proper synthesis of messenger RNA (mRNA). Regulation of transcription is responsible for the differentiation of all the different types of cells and often for the proper cellular response to environmental signals.

Transduction
1.9K
Among the three main modes of HGT—transformation, conjugation, and transduction—transduction is unique in that it is mediated by bacteriophages, or bacterial viruses.Transduction occurs in two ways. Generalized transduction occurs during the lytic cycle of a bacteriophage infection. In this process, bacteriophages infect bacterial cells, replicate within them, and ultimately cause cell lysis, releasing newly assembled virions. Occasionally, random fragments of the bacterial genome...

Neuroplasticity
2.0K
Neuroplasticity reflects the brain's remarkable capacity to adapt and evolve, responding dynamically to learning, experiences, or injury by reorganizing its neural circuitry. This reorganization involves creating new neural connections and refining old ones through a series of biological processes that contribute to the brain's lifelong development and adaptability.

Responses to Heat and Cold Stress
14.9K
Every organism has an optimum temperature range within which healthy growth and physiological functioning can occur. At the ends of this range, there will be a minimum and maximum temperature that interrupt biological processes.

What is Natural Selection?
130.1K
Natural selection is an evolutionary process in which individuals with survival-promoting traits reproduce at higher rates. These favorable traits become more common within a population or species. Naturally selected traits initially arise via random genetic mutations. In order for selection to occur, there must be variation within a population, the trait controlling the variation must be heritable, and there must be an evolutionary advantage for variation in the trait.
