    Summary

    Caries activity in children can be predicted by caries frequency and Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) levels. Combining these with lactobacilli and early lesions significantly increases predicted caries activity.

    Background:

    • Dental caries remains a significant public health issue in children.
    • Predictive markers for caries activity are crucial for targeted preventive strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the predictive value of salivary factors and clinical parameters for caries activity in children.
    • To determine if Streptococcus mutans, lactobacilli, buffer capacity, saliva secretion rate, salivary pH, plaque, and caries frequency predict future caries development.

    Main Methods:

    • A longitudinal study involving 300 children aged 9-12 years.
    • Baseline measurements of salivary S. mutans, lactobacilli, buffer capacity, saliva secretion rate, salivary pH, plaque, and caries frequency.
    • Caries increment was assessed over 1 and 2 years and correlated with baseline factors.

    Main Results:

    • Only baseline caries frequency and Streptococcus mutans counts showed a statistically significant correlation with caries activity.

    • Caries frequency and Streptococcus mutans are significant predictors of caries activity in children.
    • Salivary S. mutans, in conjunction with lactobacilli and early lesion presence, offers a stronger predictive model for caries activity.
