Summary

The SMART coil shows promising initial results for treating brain aneurysms with a good safety profile. Further research is needed to confirm long-term effectiveness of this endovascular technology.

Background:

  • Endovascular technology for intracranial aneurysms is rapidly advancing.
  • The SMART coil is a new microcoil designed for improved deliverability in aneurysm treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the initial outcomes of aneurysm embolization using the novel SMART coil.
  • Assess the safety and efficacy of the SMART coil in a clinical setting.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of 32 patients with 33 intracranial aneurysms.
  • Analysis of baseline characteristics and initial outcomes following embolization with SMART coils.
  • Data collected from June 2016 to January 2017.

Main Results:

  • No serious procedural complications were observed.
  • A low rate of device malfunction (3%) was reported.
  • High rates of immediate aneurysm occlusion (modified Raymond-Roy grade I and II) were achieved in 75% of cases.

Conclusions:

  • The SMART coil demonstrates a favorable initial risk-benefit profile for selected intracranial aneurysms.
  • Further studies are required to establish mid-term and long-term outcomes.
