Background:

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, necessitating sustainable interventions for survivors.
Yoga, a mind-body practice, shows promise for various health conditions.
Previous reviews suggest yoga's utility in stroke rehabilitation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of yoga as a stroke rehabilitation intervention.
To assess yoga's impact on functional recovery and quality of life (QoL) post-stroke.

Main Methods:

Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
Searched multiple databases including Cochrane, MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO up to July 2017.
Included RCTs comparing yoga to control groups in stroke survivors.

Main Results:

Two RCTs with 72 participants were included; meta-analysis on balance involved 69 participants.
Yoga showed a significant effect on the memory domain of QoL (very low grade evidence).
No significant effects were found for balance, gait, motor function, disability, depression, or trait anxiety. State anxiety showed a significant effect (very low grade evidence).

Conclusions:

Yoga has potential as a patient-centered stroke rehabilitation component.
Insufficient evidence exists to confirm yoga's effectiveness or safety in stroke rehabilitation.
Further large-scale, methodologically robust trials are required to establish yoga's efficacy.
