Summary

Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) show higher serum pseudocholinesterase (PsChe) levels compared to controls. Anxiety and depression scores did not correlate with these elevated PsChe levels in OCD patients.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biochemistry
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Pseudocholinesterase (PsChe) is an enzyme involved in neurotransmitter metabolism.
  • Altered PsChe levels have been observed in various psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex psychiatric condition with potential neurobiological underpinnings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum pseudocholinesterase (PsChe) levels in patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
  • To compare PsChe levels between OCD patients and healthy, age- and sex-matched controls.
  • To explore potential correlations between PsChe levels and symptom severity in OCD, as measured by anxiety and depression scales.

Main Methods:

  • Serum PsChe activity was quantified in a cohort of 20 OCD patients and 20 healthy volunteers.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants were matched for age and sex to control for demographic variables.
  • Standardized scales, including the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HRS-A) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), were used to assess symptom severity.
  • Main Results:

    • Significantly elevated serum PsChe activity was detected in the OCD patient group compared to the healthy control group.
    • No significant correlation was found between PsChe serum levels and scores on the HRS-A or BDI in the OCD cohort.
    • These findings suggest a potential link between PsChe and OCD, independent of comorbid anxiety and depression severity.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated pseudocholinesterase (PsChe) levels are associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
    • The observed increase in PsChe in OCD patients supports its potential role in anxiety-related psychiatric conditions.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the functional significance and clinical implications of elevated PsChe levels in OCD and other psychiatric disorders.
