Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Urology
  • Pain Management

Background:

  • Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a prevalent condition with complex etiologies.
  • Current treatment options for CP/CPPS, including Western medicine, offer variable efficacy.
  • There is a need for effective therapeutic strategies to manage CP/CPPS symptoms and associated psychological comorbidities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical efficacy of acupuncture combined with Western medicine versus acupuncture alone and Western medicine alone for CP/CPPS.
  • To evaluate the impact of these treatment modalities on symptom severity, pain, anxiety, and depression.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 90 patients with CP/CPPS.
  • Patients were assigned to three groups: acupuncture combined with Western medicine, acupuncture alone, or Western medicine alone.
  • Treatment involved 2 sessions of 12 days each, with outcome measures including the National Institutes of Health-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS).

Main Results:

  • The combination group demonstrated superior overall efficacy compared to acupuncture alone or Western medicine alone (P<0.05).
  • All groups showed improvement in NIH-CPSI, SAS, and SDS scores (P<0.01).
  • The combination therapy resulted in significantly greater improvements in NIH-CPSI total scores, pain, anxiety, and depression scores compared to the other groups (P<0.05, P<0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Acupuncture combined with Western medicine is more effective than either monotherapy for treating CP/CPPS.
  • This integrated approach significantly alleviates prostatitis symptoms and improves psychological well-being, including anxiety and depression.
