Summary

Delayed auditory feedback (DAF) improved speech fluency in individuals who stutter without auditory processing disorders. However, DAF did not significantly affect fluency in those with auditory processing disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

Main Methods:

  • Twenty participants (7-17 years) were divided into two groups: Stuttering Group with Auditory Processing Disorders (SGAPD) and Stuttering Group (SG).
  • Speech fluency was assessed using non-altered auditory feedback (NAF) and delayed auditory feedback (DAF) with a 100-millisecond delay.
  • Stuttering severity and central auditory processing (CAP) were evaluated using standardized assessments and Phono Tools software.

Main Results:

  • DAF significantly reduced stuttering-like disfluencies in the SG, including frequency, blocks, and repetitions.
  • No statistically significant improvements in speech fluency were observed in the SGAPD when using DAF.
  • Intragroup and intergroup analyses were conducted using Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Delayed auditory feedback demonstrates a differential effect on speech fluency in individuals who stutter.
  • Auditory processing abilities appear to be a crucial factor in the response to DAF for improving stuttering.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the underlying mechanisms and tailor interventions for individuals with stuttering and CAPD.
