Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunosuppressive Therapy

Background:

  • Severe persistent psoriasis often presents challenges in treatment.
  • Patients may be intolerant or unresponsive to existing therapies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of low-dose cyclosporin (Cys) for severe persistent psoriasis.

Main Methods:

  • Thirteen patients with severe psoriasis received cyclosporin (Cys) at 1-4 mg/kg/day (mean 2.8 mg/kg/day) for 12-25 months.
  • Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores were assessed.
  • Adjuvant topical steroid therapy was used in some patients.
  • Adverse events including hypertension, serum creatinine, and hypertrichosis were monitored.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • An 81% mean reduction in PASI score was observed by the end of the study.
  • Hypertension occurred in six patients, managed by dose reduction or medication.
  • Mean serum creatinine increased from 72 to 90 microM/l.
  • Hypertrichosis was noted in seven patients.
  • Conclusions:

    • Low-dose cyclosporin (Cys) is an effective long-term treatment for severe psoriasis.
    • It provides significant clinical improvement and sustained remission.
    • Careful monitoring for side effects like hypertension is necessary.
