Main Methods:

  • A retrospective comparative study of 2500 tonsillectomy patients over 35 years (1979-2013).
  • Surgical techniques included cold steel, microdebrider-assisted, coblation, radiofrequency, and laser.
  • Data collected on blood loss, operative time, pain, bleeding, dehydration, healing time, vomiting, and hospitalization.

Main Results:

  • Cold steel tonsillectomy was most common in the earlier period (41%), followed by microdebrider-assisted (39%).
  • Microdebrider-assisted tonsillectomy was a day care procedure in 90% of cases.
  • Other techniques like coblation, radiofrequency, and laser were used in 21% of patients.

  • Microdebrider intracapsular tonsillectomy demonstrates reduced mortality and morbidity.
