Background:

  • Conflicting data exist regarding the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and nonmelanoma skin cancer.
  • Previous research has not definitively established a link between AD and an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective, case-control study was conducted using patient data from Olmsted County, Minnesota.
  • Cases comprised patients diagnosed with SCC (invasive or in situ) between 1996 and 2010.
  • Controls were age- and sex-matched patients with no history of SCC.

Main Results:

  • 399 SCC cases were matched with 780 controls.
  • After adjusting for confounding factors, patients with a history of AD had an odds ratio of 1.75 for SCC development (95% CI, 1.05-2.93).
  • This suggests a statistically significant increased risk of SCC in individuals with AD.
