Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

1.0K
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Autism Spectrum Disorder

1.3K
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Human Genetics01:28

Human Genetics

1.7K
Human genetics provides a profound framework for understanding the interplay between genetic predispositions and human psychology. At the heart of this discipline lies the study of how genes influence physical traits, behaviors, and susceptibility to diseases. Each person carries a unique genetic code that subtly or significantly shapes their psychological and behavioral landscape.
The complex relationship between genetics and psychology is observable through common biological components such...

Biological Causes of Schizophrenia01:29

Biological Causes of Schizophrenia

681
Schizophrenia, a severe psychiatric disorder, arises from a complex interplay of biological factors, including genetic predisposition, structural brain abnormalities, neurotransmitter dysregulation, and developmental irregularities. These factors collectively contribute to the onset and progression of the disorder, which typically manifests in late adolescence or early adulthood.
Genetic Factors in Schizophrenia
The genetic basis of schizophrenia is strongly supported by family and twin...

Generalized Anxiety Disorder01:30

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

770
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry that persists for at least six months, significantly interfering with daily functioning. Unlike situational anxiety, which arises in response to specific stressors, GAD often occurs without a clear cause. Individuals may experience disproportionate worry about work, health, or relationships. For instance, a person might continuously fear poor health despite normal medical evaluations or...

Summary

Children who experienced bacterial meningitis in infancy had a significantly higher risk of developing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Early monitoring for ADHD symptoms in these children is crucial for timely intervention.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Bacterial meningitis is a serious illness associated with significant long-term health issues.
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a recognized comorbidity in children with a history of meningitis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of ADHD in children who had bacterial meningitis.
  • To evaluate the association between childhood meningitis and the risk of developing ADHD.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 60 children with a history of meningitis in their first year of life and 60 healthy controls.
  • Assessment of ADHD using DSM-IV criteria through structured clinical interviews with parents.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of ADHD was 62% in children with a history of meningitis, compared to 5% in the control group.
  • Children with meningitis had an odds ratio of 30.5 for developing ADHD (95% CI = 8.5 to 109).

Conclusions:

  • Bacterial meningitis is a substantial risk factor for the subsequent development of ADHD.
  • Children with a history of meningitis require ongoing monitoring for early detection and management of ADHD symptoms.
