  • Systematic literature search for population-based epidemiological studies of stroke in Egyptians.
  • Inclusion of original English articles published between 1990 and 2016.
  • Analysis of five studies from southern Egyptian governorates.

Main Results:

  • Crude prevalence rates (CPRs) ranged from 655 to 721.6 per 100,000.
  • Crude incidence rates (CIRs) ranged from 180.5 to 187 per 100,000.
  • Population-weighted average CPR was 613/100,000 and CIR was 202/100,000.

Conclusions:

  • Stroke incidence and prevalence in Egypt are notably high.
  • Urgent need for more population-based studies in northern Egypt and Cairo.
  • Findings highlight the significant stroke burden in Egypt.
