Guidelines for Writing Outcome01:11

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

4.1K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Mechanical Ventilation III: Noninvasive Ventilation

Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) are essential methods in respiratory care. These ventilation techniques offer unique benefits for patients with various respiratory conditions, providing adequate support without requiring intubation. Let's explore how each method is crucial in improving patient outcomes and enhancing respiratory therapy.

Summary

Survival and consciousness recovery rates improved for patients in a vegetative state (VS) over two decades. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and non-traumatic brain injury (NTBI) patients showed similar outcomes, suggesting advances in intensive care and rehabilitation.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Intensive Care Medicine
  • Rehabilitation Medicine

Background:

  • Prolonged unawareness, often following brain injury, presents significant challenges in patient outcomes.
  • Vegetative state (VS) requires specialized intensive care and consciousness rehabilitation (ICCR) for potential recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate long-term outcomes in patients with prolonged vegetative states.
  • To identify factors influencing survival and consciousness recovery in VS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 154 traumatic brain injury (TBI) and 52 non-traumatic brain injury (NTBI) patients.
  • Inclusion criteria: VS lasting over 1 month, admission for ICCR.

Main Results:

  • Overall survival rate was 67%, significantly higher than in previous studies.
  • Consciousness recovery rate was 54%, with higher rates in NTBI VS patients.
  • Factors affecting survival included age, length of stay in ICCR, and hydrocephalus.
  • Younger age, absence of hydrocephalus, and anti-Parkinsonian medication improved consciousness recovery.

Conclusions:

  • Significant improvements in survival and consciousness recovery for VS patients over two decades.
  • Outcomes for TBI and NTBI VS patients are comparable.
  • Advances in acute medical care and ICCR have positively impacted VS patient care.
