Background:

  • Rising breastfeeding rates necessitate improved perioperative care for lactating women.

  • Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center initiated a program in 2014 for comprehensive lactating patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of lactation in the perioperative population.
  • To describe preliminary data and experiences from implementing a perioperative lactation program.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective descriptive study of lactating patients undergoing procedures requiring anesthesia (August 2014 - February 2017).
  • Program focused on patient identification, education, support, and staff education/collaboration.
  • Analysis of patient volume, characteristics, procedure types, and intraoperative non-narcotic analgesic use.

Main Results:

  • Eighty lactating perioperative patients were identified over 30 months (approx. 2-3 monthly).
  • Median child age was 5 months.
  • Most patients were ASA class I-II (81%), underwent general anesthesia (89%), and received non-narcotic analgesics (89%).

Conclusions:

  • Lactating patients undergoing various procedures are regularly encountered.
  • Results will inform future research on postoperative lactation complications, breastfeeding resumption, and patient satisfaction.
