Rectal prolapse surgeries increased over a decade, with laparoscopic procedures becoming more common. Perineal procedures had the highest reoperation rates, highlighting the need for surgical technique consideration.
Area of Science:
- Colorectal surgery
- Surgical outcomes research
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Rectal prolapse is a condition requiring surgical intervention.
- Treatment strategies for rectal prolapse have evolved over time.
- Understanding trends in surgical procedures is crucial for optimizing patient care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the evolution of surgical treatments for rectal prolapse over an 11-year period.
- To assess the impact of primary surgical approach on reoperation rates in rectal prolapse patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of surgical data from the Landspatientregisteret (LPR) national registry.
- Inclusion of all hospitalized surgical treatments for rectal prolapse between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2014.
- Comparison of reoperation rates across different surgical procedures.
Main Results:
- A total of 1834 operations were performed on 1625 patients (94% female; mean age 71.6 years).
- Significant changes in surgical procedure types were observed (p < 0.0001), with increased use of laparoscopic techniques.
- Reoperation rates were 16% overall, with perineal procedures showing the highest rate (26%) compared to open and laparoscopic rectopexy (10% each).
Conclusions:
- The number of rectal prolapse surgeries has been increasing.
- Laparoscopic rectopexy is increasingly utilized for both primary treatment and reoperation.
- Perineal procedures are associated with significantly higher reoperation rates.
