Kristine Himmerick is a postdoctoral research scholar at the Center for the Health Professions at the University of California, San Francisco. Christine Everett is an assistant professor in the PA program at Duke University. Physician assistants (PAs) practice across diverse medical specialties.
Job availability significantly influences PA specialty choices.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze national job postings for physician assistants (PAs) in 2014.
To categorize PA job opportunities by practice specialty.

Main Methods:

Utilized national data from 34,137 PA job postings in 2014.
Coded each posting by practice specialty.
Performed descriptive analysis of the job market data.

Main Results:

Surgical specialties accounted for the largest share of PA job postings (28%).
Medical subspecialties followed with 23% of postings.
Primary care (19%), other (18%), and emergency/urgent care (12%) comprised the remaining opportunities.

Conclusions:

The 2014 job market for PAs demonstrated abundant opportunities, particularly within subspecialty areas.
Future research on PA job posting trends is recommended.
Trend analysis can inform PA career decisions and track professional demand.
