Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) after phacoemulsification.
  • To compare SFCT measurements pre- and post-cataract surgery.
  • To assess the temporal profile of these changes using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT).

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study involving 53 patients undergoing phacoemulsification.
  • Subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) measured using EDI-OCT preoperatively and at 7 days, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively.
  • Central retinal thickness was also monitored concurrently.

Main Results:

  • Mean SFCT increased significantly from 199.9 µm preoperatively to 228.42 µm at 7 days postoperative.
  • SFCT showed a decreasing trend, reaching 210.78 µm at 1 month and 200.63 µm at 3 months.
  • Central retinal thickness also exhibited a similar pattern of increase followed by a decrease.

Conclusions:

  • Phacoemulsification leads to a significant, albeit temporary, increase in subfoveal choroidal thickness.
  • Choroidal thickness largely returns to preoperative baseline levels by three months after surgery.
  • These findings provide insights into the short-term biomechanical effects of cataract surgery on the choroid.
