  • To investigate binaural advantages in bilateral CI users under reverberant conditions.
  • To compare the magnitude of binaural advantages in reverberant versus near-anechoic environments.

Main Methods:

  • Ten postlingually deafened adults using bilateral Nucleus 5 or 6 CIs participated.
  • Speech reception thresholds were measured in sound field across two reverberation conditions (0.06s and 0.6s).
  • Listening conditions varied by ear (left, right, both) and noise spatial location (left, front, right).

Main Results:

  • Head-shadow effect showed a strong positive impact in reverberation (0.6s RT).
  • Spatial release from masking provided a weaker advantage, diminishing with increased reverberation.
  • Binaural squelch and summation benefits were not statistically significant in the tested reverberant conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Reverberation significantly impedes binaural speech understanding in bilateral CI users.
  • The magnitude of binaural advantages is reduced in reverberant environments compared to less reverberant ones.
  • CI recipients with existing hearing difficulties may experience less benefit from bilateral processors in reverberant settings.
