Amiodarone may cause bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP), a balance disorder. This study found a 12% prevalence of BVP in patients with a history of Amiodarone treatment, suggesting a link.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) is a disabling condition resulting from impaired vestibular organs.
  • Common causes include ototoxic drugs, infections, and autoimmune diseases, but many cases are idiopathic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential link between Amiodarone use and idiopathic bilateral vestibulopathy.
  • To determine the prevalence of prior Amiodarone treatment in patients diagnosed with idiopathic BVP.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of medical records from five dizziness clinics.
  • Identification of patients diagnosed with idiopathic BVP.

Main Results:

  • 126 patients with idiopathic BVP were identified.

  • A 12% prevalence of BVP was observed in patients with a history of Amiodarone treatment (15 out of 126).
  • Conclusions:

    • The findings support the hypothesis that Amiodarone can induce bilateral vestibulopathy.
    • Recommends vestibular examination for patients on Amiodarone experiencing balance issues to enable early intervention.
