Background:

  • Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer.
  • Follicular variant of PTC can present with aggressive features.
  • Recurrence necessitates re-evaluation of treatment strategies.

Observation:

  • A 22-year-old woman diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma (follicular variant) underwent thyroid lobectomy.
  • Local recurrences were observed at 4 and 7 months post-surgery.
  • These recurrences exhibited vascular invasion and extrathyroidal spread.

Findings:

  • The patient required extensive surgical intervention and radiotherapy due to disease progression.
  • Vascular invasion and extrathyroidal spread are indicators of aggressive tumor behavior.
