Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a severe tick-borne illness caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a Gram-negative, coccobacillary bacterium. Summary

A rare Onchocerca infection was identified in a young girl in Japan. The parasite

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Parasitology

Background:

  • Onchocerca species are known filarial nematodes that typically infect livestock.
  • Previous human infections with Onchocerca have been documented globally, often linked to animal hosts.

Observation:

  • A female Onchocerca worm was discovered in histopathological sections of a foot nodule from a 2-year-old girl.
  • The geographical location of the case was southern Japan.

Findings:

  • Morphological characteristics of the identified Onchocerca were consistent with Onchocerca gutturosa and Onchocerca cervicalis.
  • These Onchocerca species are commonly found in cattle and horses, respectively.
