Bystander Effect02:09

Bystander Effect

10.3K
The discussion of bullying highlights the problem of witnesses not intervening to help a victim. This is a common occurrence, as the following well-publicized event demonstrates. In 1964, in Queens, New York, a 19-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was attacked by a person with a knife near the back entrance to her apartment building and again in the hallway inside her apartment building. When the attack occurred, she screamed for help numerous times and eventually died from her stab wounds.

Modified-Release Drug Delivery Systems: Rate-Programmed II

6
Rate-programmed drug delivery systems release drugs in a controlled manner to maintain therapeutic levels. Three main designs include reservoir, matrix, and hybrid systems.Reservoir systems consist of a drug core enclosed within a membrane that controls drug release. In non-swelling reservoir systems, polymers like ethyl cellulose or polymethacrylates are used. These do not hydrate in aqueous media and control release through membrane thickness, porosity, or insolubility. This type includes...

Modified-Release Drug Delivery Systems: Rate-Programmed I

17
Rate-programmed drug delivery systems (DDS) are designed to release drugs at specific, controlled rates to maintain consistent therapeutic levels. These systems are categorized based on their release mechanisms, including dissolution-controlled DDS, diffusion-controlled DDS, and combined dissolution-diffusion-controlled DDS.In dissolution-controlled DDS, the release rate depends on the slow dissolution of the drug itself or the surrounding matrix. Drugs with inherently slow dissolution rates,...

Bullying

8.9K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Summary

College students express willingness to intervene in sexual assaults but hesitate in real situations, often using indirect "distraction" tactics. Current bystander programs may inadvertently discourage direct intervention, potentially emboldening offenders.

Area of Science:

  • Social Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Higher Education Studies

Background:

  • Federal mandates require primary prevention in bystander programs to reduce sexual assaults on U.S. college campuses.
  • Understanding student willingness to intervene is crucial for effective program design.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore college students' hypothetical and actual willingness to act as bystanders in situations involving sexual assault risk.
  • To identify perceived risk factors and intervention strategies employed by students.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized survey data from 280 students and interview data from 20 students.
  • Assessed students' self-reported likelihood of intervention and suspicion in specific scenarios (e.g., intoxicated individuals at parties).

Main Results:

  • While 57% of surveyed students claimed high likelihood to intervene, fewer than half expressed suspicion towards someone leading an intoxicated person away (45% women, 28% men).
  • Interview data revealed common use of non-confrontational 'distraction' tactics.
  • Analysis indicated an underlying tendency to prioritize social harmony, potentially hindering direct intervention.

Conclusions:

  • Student willingness to intervene is often hypothetical, with a gap between claimed intent and observed behavior.
  • Current bystander intervention programs may need reevaluation to address the reluctance towards direct confrontation.
  • Overemphasis on non-confrontational methods could inadvertently permit offender behavior and limit program effectiveness.
