Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop urban health primary care tracks for internal medicine and combined internal medicine-pediatrics residents.
  • To enhance physician training by incorporating community-based experiences.

Main Methods:

  • Implemented novel residency tracks within an academic hospital, community health center, and community-based organizations.
  • Integrated 28-34 weeks of community-based training outside traditional settings to address structural vulnerabilities.

Main Results:

  • Graduated 16 internal medicine and 14 medicine-pediatrics residents.
  • 56% of internal medicine and 79% of medicine-pediatrics graduates pursued primary care careers.
  • 27% of graduates were placed in community organizations, with 23% in leadership roles.

Conclusions:

  • Novel residency tracks successfully placed graduates in community-based primary care settings.
  • Integrating primary care training with community organization experiences cultivates primary care leaders.
  • This model may enhance collective efficacy between medical centers and community organizations.
