The use of transdermal fentanyl in palliative care
1Research Nurse, Palliative Care Unit, Royal Marsden NHS Trust, London.
Abstract:
Morphine is recognised as the strong opioid of choice for the treatment of moderate to severe cancer pain. In some cases an alternative strong opioid is required - transdermal fentanyl represents a new option for the pharmacological treatment of pain at Step 3 of the World Health Organisation (WHO) analgesic ladder (WHO 1986). This paper aims to provide a practical overview of the use of this new method of delivering strong opioid analgesia in a patient population requiring palliative care.
