Insomnia01:27

Insomnia

507
Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, and waking up too early without being able to return to sleep. People with insomnia often experience these disruptions at least three nights a week for at least one month. Chronic insomnia, which lasts for at least three months, can lead to increased anxiety, which in turn can worsen sleep difficulties, creating a cycle of sleeplessness and stress.

Hospitals-II

1.2K
Hospitals provide inpatient and outpatient services. Inpatient services provide care to patients that stay in the hospital for an extended period, ranging from days to months. Examples of inpatient services include intensive care units, hospital wards, or surgeries. Outpatient services provide care to patients who come to a hospital for a diagnostic or treatment but do not stay overnight —for example, diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, or health education.

Hospitals offer medical and surgical care to the sick and injured, along with accommodation while they recover. At the same time, they also provide outpatient, emergency, psychiatric, and rehabilitation services to meet various community needs. In addition to providing medical care, hospitals also act as hubs for medical research and training. Hospitals use clinical procedures and evidence-based practice standards to deliver patient care. To deliver safe and efficient care, a nurse must stay up...

Management of Insomnia

The sleep cycle, an integral part of human health, consists of several stages with distinct characteristics and functions. It begins with a transition from wakefulness to sleep, known as the light sleep phase, followed by the restorative deep sleep phase, essential for physical recovery and growth. The cycle concludes with the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase, characterized by high brain activity and vivid dreaming. Insomnia, a prevalent sleep disorder, involves difficulty falling asleep, staying...

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

The Placebo Effect

The placebo effect occurs when people's expectations or beliefs influence or determine their experience in a given situation. In other words, simply expecting something to happen can actually make it happen.

Summary

Hospital physicians often prescribe sleep medication for patients with insomnia. However, the clinical impact and safety of these treatments remain largely unknown, warranting caution until more data is available.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Sciences
  • Clinical Practice
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Hospital physicians frequently encounter patient insomnia and must decide on prescribing sleep aids.
  • The clinical significance of hospital-acquired insomnia and its impact on patient outcomes are under-investigated.
  • Existing systematic reviews indicate uncertainty regarding the benefits or harms of pharmacological (e.g., melatonin, benzodiazepines) and non-pharmacological insomnia interventions in hospitalized patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current understanding of insomnia in hospitalized patients.
  • To evaluate the evidence for the efficacy and safety of sleep medication in this population.
  • To provide guidance on the use of sleep interventions for hospitalized patients.

  • Systematic review of existing literature on insomnia treatments in hospital settings.
  • Analysis of reported adverse effects for common sleep medications like melatonin and benzodiazepines.
  • Assessment of clinical outcomes associated with insomnia interventions.
  • Main Results:

    • The clinical effects of treating insomnia with medication or non-pharmacological methods in hospitalized patients are not well-established.
    • Quantitative data on the adverse effects of melatonin are lacking.
    • Benzodiazepine use is associated with significant risks, including falls, respiratory infections, and addiction.

    Conclusions:

    • There is insufficient reliable scientific evidence to support the routine use of sleep medication for hospitalized patients.
    • Given the potential risks and lack of proven benefits, caution is advised when prescribing sleep aids.
    • Further research is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of insomnia treatments in the hospital environment.
