Photoaversion, a common symptom in retinitis pigmentosa (RP), affects visual comfort. This study suggests minor visual interferences contribute to photoaversion in RP patients.

Background:

  • Photoaversion (light-induced visual discomfort) is a recognized but under-documented symptom in retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
  • Many RP patients report photoaversion even without significant cataracts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the underlying causes and characteristics of photoaversion in retinitis pigmentosa patients.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed contrast sensitivity, visual performance under glare/photostress, and short-term adaptation/increment thresholds in RP patients.
  • Compared RP patient data to normal controls.

Main Results:

  • RP patients exhibited reduced contrast sensitivity but only slight decrements in visual performance under glare or photostress.
  • RP patients showed elevated short-term adaptation and increment thresholds, yet normal adaptation rates.
  • A majority of RP patients reported photoaversion.

Conclusions:

  • Photoaversion in RP may stem from minor interferences with contrast sensitivity or adaptation, leading to functional disability.
  • A combination of minor visual aberrations could also contribute to photoaversion in RP.
