This study confirms a rare perianal atypical leiomyoma using clinical, MRI, and immunohistochemistry. Complete surgical resection and regular follow-up are crucial for managing this benign tumor to prevent recurrence.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology and Surgical Oncology
- Pathology and Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Perianal atypical leiomyoma is a rare perianal tumor with limited case reports.
- Distinguishing benign atypical leiomyoma from potentially malignant smooth muscle tumors can be challenging.
Observation:
- A 28-year-old female presented with a perianal mass of over four years duration.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 4.1cm x 5.2cm x 4.9cm round mass on the left side of the anus and vagina.
Findings:
- The diagnosis of perianal atypical leiomyoma was confirmed through clinical presentation, MRI, and immunohistochemistry.
- Surgical resection of the anal peripheral mass was successfully performed under lumbar anesthesia.
Implications:
- Complete surgical resection is essential for perianal atypical leiomyoma to prevent recurrence.
- Regular postoperative follow-up is recommended due to the potential for malignant changes or recurrence.
