Causes of death from asthma in children
Insights
Asthma deaths at Children's Hospital ceased in 1971, despite rising admissions. Review suggests undertreatment, infection, and sedation were contributing factors in earlier fatalities.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Medicine
- Respiratory Medicine
- Critical Care
Background:
- Historical analysis of pediatric asthma mortality.
- Review of asthma treatment protocols and outcomes.
Observation:
- Seven asthma deaths occurred between 1944 and 1984 at Children's Hospital National Medical Center.
- No asthma-related deaths have been recorded since 1971.
- Increased hospital admissions for asthma treatment observed post-1971.
Findings:
- Analysis of past cases identified undertreatment as a potential factor in asthma mortality.
- Infection was implicated as a contributing cause in previous asthma-related deaths.
- Sedation strategies were identified as a possible risk factor for fatal asthma exacerbations.
Implications:
- Highlights the importance of optimized asthma management in pediatric care.
- Suggests a need for continuous evaluation of treatment protocols to prevent mortality.
- Informs future clinical practice regarding pediatric asthma, focusing on avoiding undertreatment, managing infections, and judicious use of sedation.
Abstract:
There were seven deaths from asthma at Children's Hospital National Medical Center from 1944 to 1984. There have been none since 1971 despite an increased frequency of admissions for the treatment of asthma. Review of records implicated undertreatment, infection, and sedation as factors that may have contributed to deaths.
