When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands.
The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap.

Models, Theories, and Laws

Scientists frequently use models to help them comprehend a specific collection of phenomena. In physics, a model is a condensed version of a physical system that is too complex to study thoroughly. One such example is the light wave model; unlike water waves, light waves are typically invisible to us. Nonetheless, it is helpful to think of light as being composed of waves, since investigations show that light behaves like water waves. Since it is impossible to visually see what is genuinely...

Behavior is a product of both the situation (e.g., cultural influences, social roles, and the presence of bystanders) and of the person (e.g., personality characteristics). Subfields of psychology tend to focus on one influence or behavior over others. Situationism is the view that our behavior and actions are determined by our immediate environment and surroundings. In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958).

Area of Science:

  • Health Research
  • Qualitative Research Methodology

Background:

  • Theory building is considered the primary goal of qualitative research.
  • However, analysis of Qualitative Health Research (QHR) articles reveals themes are the predominant reporting format for findings.
  • Low-level theories, often presented as models, are frequently used to connect these themes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To address the under-recognition of models in qualitative research reporting.
  • To summarize and illustrate four distinct types of models used in qualitative health research.
  • To highlight the utility of models in representing qualitative research results.

Main Methods:

  • Examination of articles published in Qualitative Health Research (QHR).
  • Identification of common reporting formats for qualitative research results.
  • Categorization and illustration of four types of models: hierarchies, timelines, processes, and cycles.
  • Presentation of general model illustrations and specific examples from QHR articles.

Main Results:

  • Themes, rather than theories, are the most common way to report results in QHR.
  • Models are frequently employed to link identified themes, representing low-level theories.
  • Four key types of models were identified: hierarchies, timelines, processes, and cycles.
  • Each model type was illustrated with both a general example and a specific instance from published QHR studies.

Conclusions:

  • Models play a significant, yet often overlooked, role in synthesizing and presenting findings in qualitative health research.
  • Greater attention and recognition should be given to the use and understanding of different model types.
  • Models provide a valuable framework for connecting themes and developing low-level theories in qualitative research.
