Background:

Limited epidemiological data exists regarding driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) in Puerto Rico.
Understanding DUI prevalence and contributing factors is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the prevalence of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) in Puerto Rico.
To identify demographic and behavioral correlates associated with DUI.

Main Methods:

A household survey was conducted with 1510 adults aged 18-64 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Data collection included self-reported 12-month DUI, lifetime DUI arrests, and various risk factors.
Statistical analyses, including adjusted models, were used to determine correlates of DUI.

Main Results:

The 12-month self-reported DUI prevalence was 20% for men and 8% for women.
Risk factors for self-reported DUI included male gender, higher daily driving hours, liberal drinking norms, positive attitudes towards drinking, higher weekly alcohol consumption, and binge drinking.
Lifetime DUI arrests were associated with being separated/divorced, male gender, liberal drinking norms, and illicit drug use.

Conclusions:

Self-reported DUI is common in San Juan, Puerto Rico, despite low reported arrest rates.
Findings suggest a need for enhanced enforcement of DUI laws to mitigate the problem in urban Puerto Rico.
