Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development

1.0K
Kohlberg's theory of moral development uses the Heinz dilemma — a thought experiment in which a man, Heinz, must decide whether to steal an unaffordable drug to save his dying wife — to illustrate the evolution of moral reasoning. This framework, divided into three levels with two stages, highlights how individuals' understanding of right and wrong becomes increasingly complex.

Band Theory

17.3K
When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands.
The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Ethics
  • Qualitative Research Methodology

Background:

  • Nurse burnout and shortages are linked to moral distress.
  • Understanding moral distress is critical for improving Taiwan's clinical ethical climate and nursing retention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To reconstruct the model of moral distress using grounded theory.

Main Methods:

  • Grounded theory analysis of intensive interviews with 25 staff nurses in Taiwan.
  • Participants were recruited from adult, pediatric, acute, critical, and end-of-life care units.

Main Results:

  • Nurses' moral values influence their response to clinical events, potentially leading to moral distress.
  • Key sources of moral distress in Taiwan include wasting National Health Insurance resources and Chinese culture.
  • Self-confidence and heterodox skills were identified as factors promoting moral efficacy and action.

Conclusions:

  • The developed moral distress model can inform future nursing theories and interventions.
  • Encouraging case studies for nursing students can enhance moral values, cognition, and judgment.
  • Addressing moral distress is crucial for retaining staff nurses and improving the nursing profession.
